Making Friends as an Adult
Let’s face it…moving to a new place, starting over? It’s miserable. Making new friends as an adult can be difficult, but relocating to a new place happens to make this seem impossible. It’s been a little over a year since my last relocation, and I can say with confidence that this was my easiest one yet.
Try to make work friends be outside-of-work friends. This also works for your SO’s work.
My first place was to start to farm out my work friends to be out-of-work friends. Charles also works with primarily women, so I started to use him to get some friends too.
2. Actually leave your house.
This seems like a nobrainer, but it’s hard to make friends sitting on your couch. We started making plans to leave the house and go out to social-type gatherings a couple of times a week. It worked out. We have a standing night out with some acquaintances one day a week, and I’m always trying to meet up with people at least one other day.
3. Join a club, team, or even a gym.
This was a big one. I needed time to find friends on my own without Charles. I joined a choir. I started going to my place of worship more. Even if they aren’t “real” friends, I found a place that I could go for a few hours and get that social fix.
So yeah. It’s been a year. I’m feeling settled. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m feeling good. So now, I’m looking for your help. What are your tips for making adults as friends?
See you Wednesday!
