Switching to Natural Deodorant

Hey, I’m just gonna say this now — this is going to be a 100% TMI post, but I know that posts like this were super helpful to me, so here we go.

I haven’t been happy using traditional deodorants for a few years now. I was a Secret Va-Va-Vanilla girl for a long time, but I noticed that no matter how careful I was, my armpits were breaking out. What the hell, right? So, I was all about trying somethign different. I’m not sure when it occured to me to swap out my deodorent, but I did. I had been an antiperspirant girl as well, so this was a big jump!

I tried three different brands, and this is a 100% not-sponsored post about the past three years (ish).

The first brand I tried was from Tom’s. I used the Wild Lavendar scent, and it smells great! It had the usual “natural” claims that all the deodorants do…no aluminum, artidical fragrances, parabens…nothing crazy. I't’s almost clear, and is a lot greasier than a normal deodorant. It also elts easily. I really wanted to love this, but it dried my pits out. It’s so hard to describe. I got scaly. So I only used it for aboout a week and got rid of it. Good news? I didn’t stink, and I didn’t have to use it more than once a day.

Next up? Schmidt’s. I used the Lavendar Sage scent. I loved the scent, but this was a HARD fail. It has baking soda which abraded up the underneath of my arms. It is rough. It also has a lot of wax, and I found it was really hard in texture. It wasn’t melting onto my underarms…it was just rubbing the skin off of them. I couldn’t handle this, and I kept tryign and trying and I went through the WHOLE stick, but it never got better.

Okay. Flash forward to today. What am I using after all of that hot mess? Myro. Myro is really aesthetic. It’s pretty. It’s instagrammable. The user experience is great. It came with a “you smell great” enamel pin. It’s a sleek plastic case that’s refillable with an array of different scent sticks. This has been the deodorant that has worked the best. It has no talc, baking soda, or any of the other nasties. The reusable case also cuts down on waste, which I love. I have been loving this. I have the generic “clean” scent, which is mint and cucumber, but I’m planning on trying some others. I didn’t have any nasty “detox” period, and it’s been great. IT goes on fairly wet, but dries down. I also don’t stink. That’s the goal. Oh, and I don’t feel like it’s ripping up my armpits. We all win. It is a subscription service…so we’ll see how that goes, but I’m excited to keep trying.

Some common things that came up when I mentioned that I use a natural deodorant now:

What’s wrong with normal deordorant?

Antiperspirants stop you from sweating, which sounds really great, but they work by blocking your sweat glands up with aluminum. Has anything been proven saying that aluminum is bad? Nope! But the idea of purposely clogging my pores every single day doesn’t appeal to me. I also think that we should just accept that people sweat. Stop the stink, yeah, but everyone sweats. Let’s just deal with it.

I switched and got sweaty.

Yep. They don’t block the sweat. I thought it was gross, but I got used to it really fast.

I switched and was stinky.

There are lots of articles online about how switching to natural deodorants causes some kind of armpit detox that smells gross. This didn’t happen to me. That said, I’d say that you just gotta stick it out for a while and see if it gets better. It may have something to do with the bacteria that cause your pits to stink are having a population boom, but they will die off.

I switched and got a rash, weird color, or something else gross.

Yeah, me too. Steer clear of anything with lots of fragrance or wax. Also be wary about essential oils. Some of them can cause skin sensitivity!

Anyway, I’m digging on Myro, and will be using it for a while! If you’re interested in giving it a try, you can find it here! Happy sweating!
