Beauty Treatments You Can DIY (and Those You Shouldn't)
“Can I do this myself?”
That’s always the question. Don’t get me wrong, I love to save some money. I also love to look good. So, can you do it at home? I’m running down a few of the beauty treatments that you could DIY, and those that are best left to someone who knows what they’re doing.
Waxing
So, the big waxing is all completely DIY-able. The easiest way is to buy the pre-done wax strips from somewhere like Sally Beauty. They are super easy to use and it’s not a big deal. Besides, it’s a load cheaper and you can control your own pain. That’s somehow better, isn’t it?
Eyebrows
Let’s all be real for a hot minute — if you’re messing up your legs, whatever. If you’re messing up your face then you don’t have much of an option for failure. It’s one thing to be cleaning up a few stay hairs, but it’s another to be drastically changing the shape. Schedule a professional for that…and if you need some maintenance in between, you can take care of that at home.
Mani/Pedi
I used to be a manicure every three weeks kind of girl. I have been saving a stupid amount of money by….not doing that. I learned how to do gels at home, but lately I’ve been using press-ons to make life easy and to have zero dry time. It’s easier and (again), saving a ton of cash. After I got the hang of it, I don’t really miss it. I’ll still get a pedicure every now and then for the spa-feels of it, but it’s not a required thing in any way.
Haircuts & Color
It might seem like doing your hair at home will get you the results that you want, but in reality, it’s more likely the opposite. It will end up kind of off, no matter how hard you try. Worse, it can be harder to fix when it does go bad. It’s better to get a hairstylists that you can trust than to gamble on it at home.
Acidic Skin Peels
With all of the skin peels that are currently available for purchase through Ulta or Sephora, it’s not really necessary to get them done at a salon anymore. The caveat here is if you aren’t willing to do your research on what to do if you’re making your own skincare routine. If not, then a trip to the dermatologist is in order. However, even microneedling is an at-home activity now.
Eyelashes
If you’re going for eyelash extensions (of course that’s a different thing), you should go to a professional Similarly for tinting and perming. Just go see a salon. There is unfortunately a little too much at stake there with things close to your eye to rely on doing it yourself. As for just normally gluing on falsies, it’s quick and easy to learn how if you don’t want to go all-in on the extensions.
Good luck doing these things yourself! Otherwise, hunt down those professionals!
