Cheap or Free Date Ideas

Dating can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be! Here are some tips that have worked for me for great cheap or free ideas for date night.

1. Poker Night

Maybe you're a pro, or maybe you don't know how to play, but this is a quick and cheap date. Couple of beers and a deck of cards and you're ready to go. There's also the opportunity to make this one sexy. Or not. Whatever works for you.

2. Catch a Game

You don't necessarily need to see pro sports to enjoy the game. See what local or college teams are playing (sometimes they're free!) and check out some local talent. Hockey, soccer, football, chances are your town has something for you.

3. Art Openings

Ben and I go to a lot of art galleries and stores. We haven't bought anything yet, but it's usually a good time talking about the paintings or sculptures and a lot of the time there's free wine. Check out what places are available in your city! The first Friday of every month, our city has an art walk where all of the galleries downtown open their doors so you can wander around. It's a favorite of ours.

4. Go Antiquing

If antiques aren't your thing, this works for thrift stores or fleamarkets. It's fun to wander around and look at all the strange and unusual things that you can buy at these places. Maybe you'll even find a treasure that you can't live without.

5. Take a Hike

If you live somewhere urban, a walk through town can be just as fulfilling. If you're a little farther out, find a nice hiking trail and take a stroll. It's nice to think that you're the only people in the woods.

6. Make a Picnic

Bring a blanket and enjoy a meal outside. Maybe even bring it on your hike!

7. Embrace your Inner Arsonist

Have a nice bonfire outside somewhere. Please make sure this is legal wherever you are.

8. Photography Adventure

Everyone has a camera now, even if its juts on your phone. Spend the day on a photo safari and compare photos at the end of the day. It can be a fun little competition.

9. Karaoke

If you're not into the singing thing you can just watch and it's still a great time. Or, get a couple of drinks in you and take the stage yourself.

10. Channel Gordon Ramsay

Find a recipe online. Pick a really pretentious fancy ones (check out the New York Times) and make a five-star meal at home. Make it a fancy dinner out without the hefty pricetag.

There's some ideas to get you going. What are your go-to cheap dates?
