Secret Hiding Places
I made it through my first day as a junior! It’s a fantastic feeling. I’m more than halfway done with my degree now. It’s a combination of amazing and terrifying. This morning I got up really early so that I could streamline my day. I met a nice girl named Katrina at the library at ten. She bought my grossly overpriced chemistry textbook from last year. That’s the quickest way to make a buck at school…sell your stuff. Still though, if I ever become a professor by some fluke, I’m not going to have a textbook for my class. Zero.
After the book business, I settled into my nest on the fifth floor stacks of the library. I love that place. It’s the sort of place that is so quiet that people glare at you when you shuffle your chair a little. At this time of the year, it’s completely dead. Perfect place to relax, catch up on work, or get a nap. It is here that I waited for my class: molecular evolution.
If we’re being honest, I’m not interested in molecules in any way. The smaller things get, the less I care about them. The professor in this class is simply fantastic. I’ve had him in a few other things, and that’s why I chose this class. He’s tough, but he’s fair, and that’s what matters. The other thing about him is that he
doesn’t require a textbook. I like him more already. He also appears to care, which is unusual in classes that push 300 students. I like evolution too though. It’s my primary field of study, so…hopefully I like it increasingly more. It’s interesting, and it has real-world applications, unlike many of the other science courses I’ve taken which sit squarely in the realm of the theoretical. It’s also mind-numbingingly huge. Today, the professor in question said that the data being collected from any one given study is so huge that it can’t be transferred by internet. What. What. That’s giant. I want to be part of that. Biology guys are pretty cute too.
After that, I had to go to work. It’s one of those rough situations where work is just far enough from school to make it difficult for me to go home in between. There is a solution though! On the sixth floor of the biology department, there’s what looks like the gateway to Hell. IT’s a long, completely unlit hallway that is never cleaned. But at the end of the tunnel is the biology lounge. It’s cozy, clean, and has both a fridge and a microwave. The drinks from the vending machine cost only a dollar. It’s wonderful. There, I had time to have lunch before catching my bus to work. Fantastic. What a great day.
Did you guys have a good day? Do you have “your spot” that you like to hide out in and kill time?
