Something Blue
After the Ebola debacle, I set my sights on something a little lighter. This week I read Something Blue by Emily Giffin, sequel to the highly successful Something Blue, which also became a movie that wasn’t particularly good, or particularly bad. As a warning, this review contains major Something Borrowed spoilers, so beware.
Something Blue picks up right where something borrowed stopped. Darcy is the narrator, which is interesting, because she was really vilified in the first book. Darcy has just been dumped by her fiancé Dex for her (former) best friend Rachel. But that’s fine, because she’s pregnant with Dex’s friend Marcus’s baby. Ugh. Complicated love square. Although Darcy is determined to make things work with Marcus, there are a lot of things about him that leave something to be desired. Vain, self-centered Darcy tries to get her happy ending, but a major personality transplant is needed first.
You spend he first half of the book absolutely loathing Darcy. This is partially because she has a toxic personality, and partially because she was poisoned by the first book. Either way, she’s awful. By the end of the book, I still didn’t like her, but I was able to tolerate her a little more. It might just be me, but I was really able to relate to Rachel, because she was hyper aware of her imperfections, and how she always seemed to come second best to her better, prettier friend. Not that my life is like that, but it’s easier to sympathize with her. Darcy doesn’t’ have that same vulnerability. That being said, the book was well written and technically good. It was fascinating in that look-into-my-arch-nemesis’s-mind sort of way. If you liked the first book, it’s worth a read. I’d give it 7/10.
Happy Reading! :)
